CELL | PARCEL: The [in]visible manifestations of the fence

In order to give the scientific content of the project "acib and arts" (FFG Comet funding track) a new perspective and to possibly thereby connect to new research fields as well as to reach previously unaddressed audiences, the term "cell" is embedded, translated and communicated in the context of spatial and urban planning, urban research, architecture, art and design.

To achieve this goal, a basic understanding of the connections between research, theory and practice, current social developments as well as their spatial embedding and planning instruments is required.

These requirements are met by the project ZELLE | ParZELLE. It is a scientific-artistic approach that generates added value both for the "acib and arts" project itself, and for a better understanding of the importance of the parcel as the most important organizing element of any spatial organization.

Goals of the project:

  • To capture formal properties and changing appearances between the parcel (cell) and the urban system (living thing), to make visible structures or system elements, and to confirm affiliations to a defined urban system. CELL | PARCEL helps to define the specific characteristic of the system (living being): Emergence, changes and future developments.

  • Conveying the impact and importance of the smallest structural element in the cycle of the urban with a focus on fence (cell membrane) as one of the most important aspects when it comes to generating an ecologically, economically, socially and creatively sustainable living environment.

  • Open up and show the new fields of action in theory and practice. Just as the COVID19 pandemic calls for new medical-technological-innovative approaches, future urban developments will undoubtedly have their roots in the current contextual conditions and influences (climate change, scarcity of resources, demographic trends, etc.), which, considered together and in their further development, will leave their mark on spatial and urban planning. And here the CELL | PARCELL plays an essential role, especially when it comes to linking innovation with spatial organization (living beings).
